This was achingly beautiful. You have their voices spot on, and this exchange especially made me catch my breath on first reading:

Jim spoke, his voice harsh in his throat, "I thought I was dead."

"What?" Blair's smile died.

"I-I mean—you. I—we thought—we thought you were dead," Jim stammered.


Such a telling slip! Then, of course, you built on it later to great effect.

I also really liked the flashbacks to Blair's mini-lecture on the wide variety of death customs. I can absolutely imagine his voice coming to Jim at the most inopportune moments, refusing to let go...
