Hm. there were a bunch of reasons for the ending choice. My first thought was to add a historical perspective, sweep back to make the grief more distant, but to add a melancholy to the ending that stresses the ephemeral nature of things. The second was, I killed Ray so it was only fair I kill Fraser, too. But I wanted them to still be together in the afterlife. The third was to have a place to put Ray saving Fraser as a ghost (not to mention ghost sex) that wouldn't be anticlimactic (as a plain journal entry might have been.) But I think the most important reason was to add that final little question mark about Fraser's sanity. After all, the only proof we have that he isn't mad is in canon we see !Bob being seen by more than one person. But that doesn't mean Ray is necessarily real. After the climax I wanted to return to the main theme, the question of ghosts, and I needed an objective viewer to ask it again.

That's probably a lot more than you were interested in hearing. :)
