Halp! For a story:

Do we know where Fraser's father's cabin is, precisely?

First person to answer will get my grateful thanks and a free can of Cheese Whiz™.

(Did you know there are actually a whole series of recipes that use Cheese Whiz™ as a necessary ingredient? Could that be more wrong? And yet, with the way Fraser cooks, I wouldn't be surprised if he knew a couple of them.)

No idea about the cabin, but the cheese and broccoli rice casserole that my step grandma makes at Xmas (which involves a whole giant thing of Cheese Whiz and also a can of mushroom soup?). AWESOME.

Okay, now I need that recipe for the story. :)

Very simple. I don't have the specifics, but she has it down to a precise science.

-Dice and sautee onions and celery
-cut broccoli flowers into very small pieces
-boil a whole lot of rice -- however much it takes to fill your casserole (she makes a mid-size on . . . maybe 2 litres, ish?)
-Mix: One whole (large) jar Cheese Whiz, one can Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup, broccoli bits, onions, celery
--bake at 350F until edges brown

OMG best ever. And great cold for breakfast, too. Don't judge me.

heheh. I won't judge you, but Ray might.

My grandma made this too. It's evil how good it is. I didn't know about the Cheeze Whiz till I was an adult though. It was like learning that Santa didn't exist all over again.

this isn't terribly precise, but it is a quote from victoria's secret, which seems to indicate the approximate location of the cabin. the sergeant in question is i believe calling to say that stolen money was found in fraser's burned cabin:

Elaine: There you are. I just got off the phone with your consulate. They said a Sergeant Mears has been trying to reach you he called a dozen times.

Fraser: Thank you.

Elaine: Where's the 343 area code?

Fraser: The Yukon.

ETA: of course, the YUKON is huge, and the 343 area code doesn't exist, but oh well...

Well, hell, that's fantastic. It could even be near Whitehorse if I wanted.

Tx, Z! Email me your address and I'll send you prezzies!

...and a free can of Cheese Whiz™

Is that a...threat? Punishment by Cheese Whiz™? Maybe you should punish when we're bad and reward when we're good...I hear it works better that way...

Oh, dude. I was all over google maps researching that for myself awhile back... I can't remember the exact quote at the minute, or the ep it comes from, but Fraser references something like the cabin is (was) a couple days' hike in from Chilkoot Pass.

And now it will vex me until I can put my finger on it again. :-p

And HA! It was Bounty Hunter, and this exchange between Janet Morse and Fraser:

Janet: You miss home.

Fraser: Yes. You?

Janet: Oh, yes. You got a place?

Fraser: Mmm-hmm. Fortitude Bay. It's a four-day hike in from Chilkoot pass. It's very peaceful, well, once you get past the lava springs and the polecats and the poisonous tundra beetles. You?

Thank you kindly, simplystars!

Interesting. I'm not getting any Fortitude Bay on googlemaps. There is a Chilkoot near Whitehorse, but not a pass. Northeast of Whitehorse appears rather mountainous by satellite.

From: [identity profile] simplystars.livejournal.com
Heh. Yeah, I think Fortitude Bay was pretty much a figment, to go with Fortitude Pass from Victoria's Secret. But there is, apparently, a real Chilkoot Pass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chilkoot_Pass) in the Coast Mountains between Alaska and the Yukon.

Of course, maybe that might have been Fraser's own property, and not where his father's cabin had been... dunno. :)

And seriously, do you think Ray is the kind of guy to scorn Cheez Wiz? Because I can just see him taunting Fraser with cheese in a can, and Fraser wigging over the harm of aerosol cans and processed cheese food and then the two of them really getting into it over Velveeta, too. Hee. *amuses self*

Oh, and in that wiki article? If you click the lat/long coordinates you'll pull up a page where you can look at oodles of maps. It doesn't look all that far from Whitehorse, actually, at least not by the scale... :)

Map dorks rule! I admit I've certainly learned more about the geography of Canada than I ever would have, otherwise. :)

While there isn't a lot of canon evidence to the contrary, I have trouble buying that Fraser doesn't know or care a thing about cooking or food. Do what you gotta do, but in my fic, the man likes food. We know he can at least make pancakes. *g* :))

And ugh, I can't believe Dief eats the batter! That wolf will eat anything.

And of course, my sweet. He can be a chef if you will—that's the beauty of fandom.

For the purposes of this story, though, he's about to make Ray gag. :D

wheee! excellent. Just pointin' out you were saying it like it was canon certainty.

Date: 2008-02-24 06:57 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] arrow00.livejournal.com
Well, he does make some pretty appalling stuff in canon. E.g., in Victoria's Secret that gunky, overcooked pasta dish that he also ends up feeding to Dief.

And there's that weird campfire crispy spaghetti in the Scarpa episode. And he seems to have no problem with eating grubs and worms in North.

So, yeah, I def think there's some canon support for him not being a gourmet or a gourmand. Which isn't to say I don't think he *could* be, because I tend to treat canon as slice-of-a-person. The entire person cannot be depicted. Heck, we don't see him going to the bathroom either, but that doesn't mean he doesn't go.

And in the canon examples he's pretty much cooking for himself. I bet if he were cooking a special meal for Ray, Fraser would go to the library and check out a gazillion cookbooks and read them *all* and present some perfectly fabulous haute cuisine with a little smile.

::imagines the radish bits flying off his knife like when he whittled the statue of David::

Another note from the "did you know?" file...

*L* I love that! I managed a Mickey-D's for a while, so I'm hardly in a position to even argue that point! :)

ps. I don't comment nearly as often as I should--you write awesome dS and TS fic and I love reading your stories!

Cheers!

There's a picture on Google Earth at: 59º 42' 47.60" N 135º 3' 10.95" W... um, that's intimidating, but just copy-paste it and let GE do the rest I suppose... Anyway, it's a little way in from Chilkoot Pass and it's labeled "Fraser, Canada." It's an old red, wooden train station in the middle of nowhere with "FRASER" written on the side. I'd post the pic, but I don't know how. Maybe there was a town there once? Maybe just one Mountie living in his lonely little cabin? Maybe the train station's proper name is Fraser?

Yeah, I don't know if that's still relevant or helpful, but it's cool.
